We had fun with some "shake painting" today! The kids added paint to their paper in a container, then added some marbles, beads, and golf balls, snapped on the lid and started shaking! We noticed the different sounds that different balls made, observed the balls mixing our colors into new colors, saw the tracks left behind, and had lots of fun making some beautiful art!

We had big fun with paint bubbles this morning! Bubbles are always fun...add a bit of paint and some paper for print-making, and it's extra exciting! :)
The kids requested some "feet painting" again today! Messy, sensory play is not just FUN, but it is so full of benefits for young children: they rely on sensory input to learn about their environment. Sensory play helps build neural connections that support thought, learning, and creativity. It supports language development, cognitive growth, fine/gross motor skills, problem solving/reasoning, and social interaction. And when kids are engaged, they are learning!
We had some BIG painting fun today! I spread a giant sheet of paper across the floor, prepared the kids to get messy, and let them at it! :) It was so much fun to watch the kids experience so many different aspects of a simple activity.
Now a full week into 2015, I have so enjoyed looking back on what an amazing year 2014 was! I was blessed enough to spend MANY special moments with some super special kids, and thankful that some of those moments were even preserved on camera. I have chosen my very favorite photos from the past year, and I hope you all will enjoy getting a glimpse of the joy, learning, friendships, and excitement that we have experienced together. As with all photos, what makes them great is the story behind them, so I've added descriptions to some that explain why they are my favorites. Just click the post link to see all the photos!
This group is ALL about tractors these days! So this morning, we did some painting with them. Tractor track painting was a hit! They rolled and rolled and rolled their tractors, and then when they were all done with that, we had a "tractor wash!" :)
I am pretty sad that summer is coming to an end, but we are not going to let that stop us from enjoying every last bit of nice weather in our new mud pie kitchen! (Though I think it will make a fun snow pie kitchen, too!) I still hope to add a real kitchen sink on the left side, but it's definitely usable! The kids were so excited to see it ready for play this morning, and they have already spent hours scooping, digging, squeezing (great pre-writing work!), counting, measuring (math concepts), role-playing, planning, communicating, problem solving (VERY important social skills), just rolling in the new dirt patch, and having SO MUCH FUN! We were also in the mood for some painting today, so some jumped right into that as well!
Chalk paint was a big hit yesterday! Equal parts cornstarch and water, with food coloring or liquid watercolor mixed in, then frozen. The kids had fun using them as chalk, and then even more fun when they discovered that as it melted, it made oobleck...one of our favorite sensory materials! They loved watching the colors swirl and run together as it melted. Shhhhh...don't tell, but we worked hard today on some resist-paintings for our Moms! Using an idea from The Educators' Spin On It, we started off with the book "Mouse Paint," and then worked on painting softly, like little mouse feet, on our papers so we could reveal a fun surprise at the end! The story, "Mouse Paint" is about three little mice who discover some color mixing fun, so we too started out with only the three primary colors and had fun mixing!
We had lots of fun bubble wrap painting this morning! I set out the bubble wrap and paints, and some paper and the kids painted and made prints over and over again! You know they like it when you hear, "I'm going to do this all day long!" :)
